What We’ve Been Up To…

You can’t think about spring without thinking about entertaining. The season brings nearly everything you need to throw a successful dinner party: fresh produce for the meal, lush flowers for the table, and warmer weather in which to dine. The one thing Mother Nature can’t provide? All the wares to host and entertain in style. Fortunately some of our favorite brands, including Vietri (think stoneware accented with nautical motifs), Juliska (classic glassware that feels fresh all year round), and Caskata (whimsical blue-and-white dishes) have new spring collections to help you do just that. Try mixing in a few spring-inspired vintage treasures for an extra dose of seasonal charm.

A Parting Piece of Knowledge…

While you wouldn’t want live specimens inhabiting your house, insect art and accents are a charming way to add a cabinet-of-curiosities vibe to your space—whether as part of a botanical-style print or preserved in a shadow-box frame. But these designs aren’t all about appearances, at least when you look back in history. Cultures all over the world have used insect motifs in art, each with its own unique symbolism. The ancient Egyptians adorned their wares and works with scarabs, which they associated with power and immortality. In religious Renaissance paintings, the depiction of a butterfly symbolized the life cycle, while a wasp represented the presence of evil. For many Native American tribes, the dragonfly signified happiness and speed. No matter where you encounter an insect in the design world, one thing is certain: Pests they are not.
