A Parting Piece of Knowledge…

The egg’s place in the home goes far beyond the Easter season—and the kitchen, for that matter. To understand why, we must look back several hundred years to Victorian England. The collecting of real, rare bird eggs was a popular hobby among gentlemen of the leisure class, who stored them away for safekeeping or put them on display in their homes. Egg-collecting has since fallen out of favor and is in many instances illegal. Nevertheless, the elegant, simple, and organic shape of the egg still renders it a favorite design motif, whether as a marble objet, as inspiration for the base of a lamp, or as the subject of a framed ornithological print.
