A Parting Piece of Knowledge…

In the digital, paperless days we now inhabit, the paperweight can feel somewhat obsolete. But nearly 200 years ago, when it debuted, it was all but a necessity. The golden age of the paperweight took place in France between 1845 and 1860. Cheaper paper and more reliable mail delivery encouraged people to write more letters, and they needed a way to tame and organize all their documents. The design du jour was a half-sphere made of glass, in which preserved flowers or insects were often embedded. Though you’ll find few (if any) papers on desks today, paperweights have maintained popularity thanks to the high-style embellishment they add to desks. And who doesn’t want that while hard at work?
