A Parting Piece of Knowledge…

Pagodas may bring to mind traditional East Asian architecture, but the structures actually originated in India as sacred sites for Buddhist worship. The multitier building type made its way to East Asia as the religion spread, and now you’re likely to see versions both big and small when visiting the region. The pagoda’s fanciful form makes it a popular decorative motif; it’s a key element in chinoiserie, and its shape has inspired pendant lighting, mirror frames, and even patio umbrellas.
