What We’ve Been Up To…

It’s Labor Day weekend, which means the sun is setting on summer. To celebrate the season’s unofficial end (and to ease the blow of this whole back-to-reality thing!), we’re taking 20% off nearly everything on our site.

Some of our favorite finds? For starters, our entire outdoor collection, including exclusive styles designed by our in-house experts. Yes, we know the outdoor season is coming to a close in some parts of the country, but it never hurts to get prepped for next year—especially at these prices! (And if you’re getting ready to stow your outdoor essentials until next spring, make sure to check out our outdoor-furniture care guide.) What else are we loving? Whimsical sea-inspired artwork by Emma Williams, our collection of impossibly soft throws (perfect for cozying up as the weather cools!), and our stunning assortment of hand-knotted rugs. Happy shopping!

A Parting Piece of Knowledge…

Though landscape painting has been around for thousands of years—the ancient Greeks and Romans were known for depicting the natural world around them—it wasn’t considered a recognized genre of fine art until much more recently. Prior to that, history paintings, which portrayed scenes from the past, religious narratives, or mythological subjects, were considered the best-of-the-best. Landscapes rose in popularity during the Renaissance period, but it wasn’t until the early-19th century that academies and collectors began to take them seriously.

Artists of all stripes have been captivated by landscape subjects; consider the romantic vistas of the Hudson River School, the painterly Impressionist works 0f Monet and Renoir, or the boldly modern pieces of Matisse. No matter the style, each composition plays a glorious tribute to the beauty and power of nature.
