A New Chapter in Highlands, North Carolina

A New Chapter in Highlands, North Carolina

Highlands, North Carolina was a vacation escape for two empty nesters, but after retirement, they decided to make it their permanent residence, building a 5,000 square foot house and tapping the principal designers of Curated Studio, Lauren Taylor and Kakin Nichols, to make it a home.

The homeowners sought a combination of functionality and fashion in their new space. Every element needed a place and purpose, with livable interiors that harmonized with the stunning landscape. The Curated Studio design philosophy centers on creating a space that melds architecture and aesthetic, simplicity, and refinement, and so in this home, designers drew inspiration from the seasonal changes of the natural environment, making the most of floor-to-ceiling windows and sweeping vistas.

This seasonality and “bring-the-outside-in” mindset are reflected in the rich, vibrant color palette of the home, boasting lush greens that call to bright summer days, richly stained woods that mimic the shades of fall, and soft neutrals, blues, and terracotta hues. Patterns in large and small scales add texture, interest, and a bit of fun to the space, especially the abundant plaids and checks throughout.

When asked about favorite spaces in the home, Lauren Taylor and Kakin Nichols mention the home’s study as one of the most interesting to create. The homeowners requested to incorporate an inherited painting of a horse-and-dog hunting season, which inspired a design akin to a cozy, English-style library. A brass-and-leather chandelier, plaid drapes, and leather furnishings complete the look.

The homeowners also trusted the vision of Curated Studio in the bar area. Though at first hesitant, the homeowners embraced the bold, full-height splash, dark cabinetry, and brass shelves as one of their most favored spots in their new space

By the end of the project, the designers got to know not only the homeowners but their three children and three grandchildren, opting to let each child pick out the color scheme for their respective room. It’s fitting that the project turned into a family affair, ensuring a bright new chapter in retirement for the homeowners and their kids, too.
