When a mother and her teenage daughter sought a fresh start moving from San Francisco to Sausalito, they tapped nearby residential interior design firm Lark + Palm to make their new house a home for the family.
Spanning 2900 square feet across three floors and with “magnificent views” of Sausalito Bay, the house had “contemporary bones… but it needed a personality and to be softened a bit,” said co-founder and designer Stephanie Waskins. The client’s only request was to make the new home their own (“We were blessed with a very trusting client,” remarked co-founder and designer Ansley Majit), so Lark + Palm leaned into the sophistication and ease of the surrounding area.
“It became quite clear that our client was mostly drawn to neutral, earthy tones and a mix of contemporary and organic pieces for furniture, textures, color palette and even art,” Majit said. “[She] loved the idea of the neutral palette with a bit of saturation in certain hues, [so] we incorporated the darker greens, deep ochres and blacks to punctuate certain areas.”
Though the palette of the home is serene and monochromatic, it’s anything but dull. The living room boasts a variety of textures in the same grounding hues, layering wool and sisal rugs, a marble coffee table, and a hand-carved wooden lamp, among other items, to provide visual interest. The most challenging installation of the home also took place in the living room–the rope light fixtures by CUFF STUDIO. “It took five people and two days!” exclaimed Majit. Art in the living room, commissioned by Los Angeles-based artist Jackie Leishman, is also a focal point. “She was a pleasure to work with, and we love the result,” said Waskins.
It’s hard not to be enamored with the home’s final look. “This has been one of our favorite projects to date,” said Majit. “It was so much fun to work in our own town of Sausalito and see this family settle into our wonderful community.”
