Your 2024 Decoscope

Welcome to our seventh annual Decoscope! Once again, we’ve consulted with the stars to anticipate your best decorating plans for the coming year based on your Western zodiac sign. Whether you’re an astrology believer or skeptic, you’re apt to find some design inspiration below.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Being a take-charge kind of sign, Aries will be happy to know that 2024 will present multiple opportunities to show off their leadership skills and organizational prowess, especially at work—and these opportunities may well result in financial rewards during the second half of the year. But these opportunities, and other challenges, might also stress you out. To avoid reaching a breaking point, start creating a restful haven now. Dress your bed in the softest sheets you can, upgrade to a truly comfortable desk chair, hang a landscape of a favorite locale (the beach, the mountains, the Yemeni desert with its dragon’s blood trees). Making your surroundings as comforting as possible really will help you remain your calm and collected best.

If you buy just one thing this year, make it… a Chamomile Lavender Candle or Diffuser. Both of those top fragrance notes are relaxing ones.

Add comfort to your command post with seating like the adjustable Nora Desk Chair, which has S-spring construction, a perfectly pitched back, and plush (yet durable) upholstery. Find a similar console table here.

Even a small room can accommodate plenty of seating. The key is to choose pieces that are thoughtfully scaled, such as the Laguna Sectional and the Lowell Chair. It also helps to have stools or ottomans, such as the Harold Nimbus Ottomans, that you can tuck under a console or shelf when not in use and a cocktail ottoman, such as the Cutler Round, that can serve as a table or additional seating.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Last year was one of discovery and stepping outside of your comfort zone. This year, particularly come spring, you’ll really reap the rewards of those risks you took and changes you made. Because you’ll want to celebrate these glad tidings with friends and family, now’s the time to make your home guest-ready. That could mean finally swapping out that narrow couch for a roomy sectional or a sleeper sofa, bringing in an extendable dining table so that you can host a crowd, or ensuring you have enough tableware so that you don’t have to resort to paper plates. And if you’ve been making do with a twin or full bed, the stars indicate that this year you might need to expand to a queen or a king.

If you buy just one thing this year, make it… faux-fur pillows or a faux-fur throw. Tauruses tend to be highly tactile. Lean into that with sumptuously soft, perfectly plush textiles.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Congratulations, Gemini: 2024 is shaping up to be a great year for you on all fronts. Make the most of it by getting around to any major home investments you’ve long had in mind. Now’s the time to get started on that sunroom extension, kitchen renovation, or living room redesign. (One Kings Lane Interior Design can help!) Or perhaps you simply want to finally store your books in a bookcase rather than in unwieldy stacks, or swap out that ugly boob light in the hallway for a statement-making chandelier. Whatever it is you’ve been itching to change, go for it.

If you buy just one thing this year, make it… something truly extravagant: the Lismore Diamond Vodka Chiller Set, perhaps (all diamond-cut crystal and sparkling silver), or an antique Venetian mirror, or a handcrafted rug made from hide “tiles.”

If you’ve been wanting to reward yourself to a major artwork (such as Untitled 45: Omo by Drew Doggett) this is the year to do so.

What’s more relaxing than kicking back in a recliner with a good book? Kicking back in a recliner, such as the Newman Recliner Chair, that’s as handsome as it is comfortable. Also shown: the Sai Hand-Carved Reclaimed-Wood End Table.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

The sign of the crab is all about domesticity and self-care, and never more so than in 2024. This year will be a bit up and down for you (though the good will far outweigh the bad!), so be especially kind to yourself during the more-challenging moments. If you favor long soaks in the tub, treat yourself to the thirstiest bath towels and a luxe cotton shower curtain. Prefer losing yourself in a good book or music? Opt for a recliner, or complement your favorite chair with pillows and an ottoman for optimal comfort. Most important, don’t feel obliged to update your home with the latest trends. If red stripes and purple polka dots make you happy, add more red stripes and purple polka dots into your home.

If you buy just one thing this year, make it… a piece of art that speaks to you, whether it’s a framed reproduction of a favorite work or a one-of-a-kind painting.

Leo (July 23-August 22)

Leos don’t like to compromise. However, doing so will be important at home and at work, particularly in the latter half of the year. Which is all the more reason to indulge in something just for you in the first part of 2024: a weekend at a spa, a vintage Hermès bag, an alpaca throw to wrap yourself in, a leather-bound copy of Goodnight Moon for nostalgia’s sake… Enjoy!

If you buy just one thing this year, make it… Egyptian cotton bedding. Thanks in large part to the longer staple of the plant fibers, Egyptian cotton textiles are softer, more breathable, and more durable than those made from other types of cotton. And as a Leo, you know that nothing but the best is good enough for you.

Throw pillows are the perfect low-risk, high-reward purchase: They won’t break the budget, and you can easily swap them out should you tire of them.

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

Virgos tend to be cautious to a fault. This year, however, you’ll be called upon to be much more decisive to avoid missing out on a few opportunities. Practice by purchasing a few of those items you’ve long had your eye on but couldn’t quite commit to—that bone-inlay wall mirror to dress up your bedroom, for instance, or that storage bench to help organize your entry. Alternatively, let yourself make a few small impulse buys. If you fall in love with a dazzling vase or a pair of foo dog table lamps and they fit your budget, snap them up. Start with no- or low-risk decision-making so that you’ll be ready when the stakes are higher.

If you buy just one thing this year, make it… a vintage find. Hesitation might have cost you a few one-of-a-kind treasures in the past. But that’s not the case for the new, more-decisive you!

Libra (September 23-October 22)

You’re going to be busybusybusy throughout 2024, Libras. Expect to do some traveling during the first half of the year, then plenty of entertaining in the second half. To prepare your home for guests galore, consider upgrading to stain-resistant performance upholstery. You’ll be surprised by how many options there are, from solid velvets to linenlike patterns, covering everything from sofas to dining chairs. Another crowd-friendly (and kid-friendly, pet-friendly) switch to make: machine-washable rugs or easy-to-clean indoor/outdoor rugs. Along the same lines, consider adding shatter-resistant tableware to your assortment.

If you buy just one thing this year, make it… a tray. It’s handy and handsome. Use it to serve drinks, corral clutter on a console table, keep toiletries organized on a vanity, add flair to a cocktail table… you get the idea.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)

The first nine months of 2024 will be financially rewarding for Scorpio. So in addition to setting aside some savings for unexpected expenses that might pop up at the end of the year, consider making a few judicious large-ticket purchases. These could be anything from a car to stocks to a dining room makeover (with a free assist from One Kings Lane Interior Design, of course). Try not to be impulsive, however—difficult for most Scorpios, of course. When choosing home furnishings, for instance, opt for well-made items that will stand the test of time: benchmade upholstered pieces in classic silhouettes, handcrafted ceramic table lamps, hand-knotted traditional rugs. Don’t skimp on craftsmanship, materials, or any necessary research (if you’re purchasing a sectional sofa, say, measure your space, then measure again).

If you buy just one thing this year, make it… a bed, especially if the one you’ve been using has seen better days. This guide will help you decide which size and type is right for you, then go for the best you can afford—and enjoy years of sweet dreams.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)

After what promises to be an eventful and fruitful first half of 2024, Sagittarius will be yearning for a break come summer. Schedule a vacation, or at least a staycation, and also try to slot in some leisurely weekends at home. Make the most of the sunny days and balmy nights by optimizing your outdoor spaces. Add a bench or swing to your porch, create dedicated lounging and dining spaces on your deck, and consider adding a fountain to your garden so that you can relish its burbling sound. Don’t have an outdoor space? Mimic one indoors with lush plants, real or faux. You might even want to add some wicker and rattan touches, such as a cane-framed mirror or an elephant-shape rattan end table.

If you buy just one thing this year, make it… a planter that really expresses your style: a chinoiserie porcelain vessel, perhaps, or a minimalist rounded option

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)

Focusing on communication, intimacy, and relationships this year will prove highly satisfying for Capricorns. Should you find yourself in a romantic rut with your partner, make date nights or cozy dinners for two a priority. Pull out all the stops for the latter: fine china, favorite foods (whether that’s caviar or burgers and fries), crisp table linens, and of course candlelight. If work commitments have been hampering your social life, invite friends over for a game night or movie night. Bring out the floor pillows and poufs, load up on popcorn and pretzels, set out a cheese board, and enjoy!

If you buy just one thing this year, make it… a bar cart. It will make entertaining, either for two or for a crowd, so much easier, and it adds panache to a room between gatherings.

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)

Career-wise, 2024 is Aquarius’s year. Which is not to say you can simply sit back and wait for the promotions, bonuses, and clients to come pouring in. You’re going to be working harder than ever, especially if you own a business or recently made a major career change. And that will likely mean putting in extra hours at home. So make sure spending time in your home work space feels less like a punishment and more like a satisfying investment in your future. A desk with ample storage and an adjustable chair will pay dividends. There are plenty of both that work hard while looking good—great news if you don’t have a dedicated home office and need to devote a portion of another room to work. And if that’s the case, consider purchasing a room screen. Not only will it literally separate business from pleasure, but it will also help minimize distractions while you’re plugging away.

If you buy just one thing this year, make it… a decorative item for your desk. Adding a faux-floral arrangement, a silver picture frame, or a vintage collectible will remind you that there’s more to life than work.

Pisces (February 19-March 20)

Creativity is the theme of 2024 for Pisces. Thinking and acting creatively will help you reach your long-term goals—or if you don’t have any, help you determine what you’d like to work toward. One way to get creative is to seek out newness. This can range from taking foreign-language classes to trying sepak takraw to adding vibrant wallpaper to your neutral-tone entry. Another way is to schedule daily downtime—for journaling, for meditation, for working on a crossword puzzle—to savor alone in a serene setting. Tailor this space especially for you, with a comfortable chaise or club chair, an adjustable lamp, and a sheepskin rug you’ll love resting your bare feet on.

If you buy just one thing this year, make it… a side table with a drawer. This will allow you to keep your journal or other private items just that: private. And it will encourage you to tuck away your phone and other distractions when you’re settling in for your daily downtime.
