The Season of Organic Luxury

The Season of Organic Luxury

Organic textures and nature-inspired palettes—so soothing! so easy-breezy!—have been popular home decor elements for several years now. And they’ll remain popular for the foreseeable future. Now, though, more luxurious, refined, and glamorous materials are being introduced into the Naturalist mix.

Luxuriousness isn’t new to organic ease: Think cashmere and alpaca throws, mother-of-pearl inlays, marble tables and decor, hide rugs. But this season we’re seeing more glimmer and shimmer, with gold in particular making its presence felt. (Don’t forget that gold is a natural element!) Gold and brass manage to be both warm and cool, making them ideal complements to the neutral hues of rattan, wood, and jute.

Speaking of hues, palettes are becoming a bit richer too. Wood furniture frames, particularly those accompanying rattan caning, are taking on darker stains, nodding to Art Deco and Belle Époque glamour. Black is back as an accent, in ceramic decor and patterned pillows. Amber, rust, and sage are bringing gravitas and opulence to upholstery and linens.

Let’s face it: We could all do with a dash of luxury and opulence right now. The past few years have been challenging, to say the least. So let’s reward ourselves by elevating our homes, and our spirits, with touches of luxe. Whether it’s a lavishly figured burl wood table or a tray clad in gold leaf, a plush hand-knotted wool rug or Egyptian cotton sheets in an unexpected darker color, it’s time to relish organic elegance at its most sumptuous.

The jewel-tone velvet of the Hazel Waterfall Bench by Kim Salmela accentuates the richness and warmth of this bedroom. The Prado Egyptian cotton bedding from the Matouk Schumacher Collection feels even more opulent than it looks, as does the hand-knotted rug from STARK. Adding pillows in darker colors and varied textures—hand-spun cotton, silk velvet—is an easy way to update a Naturalist space. Find the pillow at left here and the one next to it here.

Accents and artwork in black and dark gray, such as the Isaac Sculpture (inspired by the moai of Easter Island) and the (confusingly named) Amber Vase, make a strong statement among paler neutral hues. Find the black-and-white abstract, Centered I, here and the dried mountain laurel branches here.
