Fall Refresh: Decorating with Velvet, Sheepskin, and Leather

Filed Under:

Long sleeves, knit sweaters, jackets and scarves: Fall fashion is all about adding layers for maximum warmth and comfort. The same mandate goes for the home, and with pieces that are just as cozy. Here, we’re highlighting a few of our favorite cool-weather materials—plush velvet, rich leather, and supersoft sheepskin, all ideal for giving your home its own seasonal wardrobe update.

Luxe It Up

Sofas, accent chairs, headboards—velvet furnishings come in a variety of forms, and for good reason. The material is a failproof way to add a layer of luxury to a room (it’s long been associated with nobility), due in large part to its beautifully subtle sheen.

Surprisingly versatile, velvet can lean either modern or traditional. Here, a sofa upholstered in lush blue velvet brings a note of bold glamour to a classic space while maintaining the overall refined ambience. And even though the fabric feels especially appropriate for fall, we say velvet, at least for the home, works in all seasons.

Add a Hint of Texture

If you’re not keen on diving headfirst into velvet, a single pillow on the bed is an easy place to try out the trend—and to instantly warm up your sleep space for the cooler months. Here, a hot-pink example adds a touch of luxe texture, making crisp cotton sheets and an airy floral print feel invitingly cozy.

Lay Down Cozy Layers

Small-scale sheepskins can warm up any space in your home: Try draping one over the back of a sofa or chair, at the end of the bed, or even atop another rug.

This space—filled with light, lots of greenery, and vibrant, worldly patterns—is made instantly cool-weather-worthy with sheepskins. They not only function as cushions to add comfort to the dining chairs, but they also help to unify the mismatched set. If you don’t want to cover up your cushions, drape the hides over the backs of the chairs to achieve a similarly luxe look.

Create Contrast

Look to the organic softness of sheepskin to take a minimalist vignette into much warmer territory. Here, the plush wool complements the natural wood and neutral hues, bringing to mind timeless Scandinavian design. It also gives the wooden bench—a simple piece with a rustic vibe—a luxurious, “finished” feel.

Pull Up a Chair

Just like your favorite leather jacket, leather furnishings of all types feel especially fitting for fall. This season, try the material somewhere unexpected. We love this fresh take on the leather dining chair, with its industrial-inspired frame and rough-hewn construction. Rustic yet modern, these chairs present a welcome contrast to the formal table skirt and give the room a sense of playfulness.

Style with the Classics

The rolled arms. The elegant tufting. The rich patina. These are just a few of the reasons the leather chesterfield has been a design icon for decades. Anchoring any room it’s placed in, the chesterfield sofa adds a classic feel—yet it pairs equally well with contemporary furnishings. It’s not only a way to update for fall but also an investment piece that will stand up to the test of time and trends.

Hide It Out

Hide rugs may be the the ultimate multitaskers. They add warmth and softness underfoot, they stand up to spills beautifully, and they bring a gorgeous organic element to any room.

Here, a hide warms up an industrial-feeling space, lending earthy texture and softening the angular shapes around it. We love the statement it makes on its own, but if your floors are already occupied, layer on a hide in your print of choice (cow, zebra) to add major textural interest.
