Designer Iris Dankner founded the annual Holiday House NYC show house to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF)—because as Ms. Dankner, a survivor of the disease herself, has been known to say, “Every day in remission is a holiday.” Located in a classic townhome on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, this year’s house features the work of 22 firms, including, for the first time, a space by One Kings Lane Interior Design.
“We were very inspired by icons of American design—people like Elsie de Wolfe and Billy Baldwin—and the way they were able to create spaces that could transport you to another time or place,” says lead designer Becca Roderick, who worked with her team to create an experience centered around color, texture, comfort, and the enigmatic feeling of home.
Cloaked in hues of persimmon and blue, One Kings Lane’s cocoonlike space encompasses both a formal dining area and a cozy living room, with doors that lead to the house’s lush garden. Light from floor-to-ceiling windows casts a radiant glow over an intriguing mix of vintage furnishings and of-the-moment elements, from a bar cabinet crafted to resemble a Georgian house to a saucerlike pendant that seems to hover rather than hang.
A corner vignette bathed in sunlight boasts colorful contemporary prints, a pedestal, decorative pedestal by Global Views, and sculptural ceramic pots from FEA Home. Custom panels of open cane webbing on the walls lend extra depth and texture to the room. The floor lamp in the corner is by Visual Comfort.
Crowned with a bold geometric print from artist Dawn Wolfe, a black Ave Home secretary doubles as a chic bar. The linen ottoman repeats a cool turquoise hue used used sparingly throughout the space.
A Federal-style walnut chest speaks to classic American design. On top, antique treasures from Thailand, China, and Japan lend a global layer between two small nickel table lamps.
