Stock Up

Much like a bear readying for hibernation, you’ll need to stock up on pertinent items to tide you over for the season.

  1. Throws. Blankets and throws are absolute musts. We recommend going with faux-fur throws if you live in a cooler climate. If you’re in a bit more temperate environment, alpaca and cashmere blankets will keep you warm but also breathe a bit more than faux fur.
  2. Candles. These are the quickest way to add cozy atmosphere to a room. Search for fragrances that feel dark and moody. Be on the lookout for pine– or spice-scented candles. For fragrance without the flame, try a diffuser, such as this woody, spicy one.
  3. Pillows. We like to change our throw pillows with the seasons. Velvet options are especially inviting for fall and winter. Bonus points if they’re a fun shape.
  4. Dinnerware. Look for dinnerware that has seasonally appropriate motifs, such as woodland scenes in browns and oranges. (We’re big fans of Juliska’s Country Estate pattern.)
  5. Art. Some people might find photos of surfers and paintings of gardens in bloom refreshing during the cold-weather months. If you’re not one of them, swap them out for art that celebrates the season, such as Snowmass Picnic and other ski-resort photography by Slim Aarons

Styled to Perfection

Once you’ve stocked up on everything you’ll need, it’s time to style.

  1. Entryway. Greenery is certain to freshen up your entryway. Hang a magnolia wreath on the door and allow it to dry all season long. Add cotton stalks and mountain laurel branches to tall arrangements; opt for wheat stacks instead of fresh greenery in shorter arrangements. You can also go with faux florals in seasonally appropriate colors.
  2. Living room. Remember those pillows you stocked up on? It’s time to put them out. We suggest starting with velvet for a lushly textured base, then layering patterned pillows on top. Once you’ve done that it’s time to look elsewhere. Do you need to stock up on firewood? Try placing it in a leather basket so it’s easily (and chicly) accessible—and if you don’t have a fireplace, use it to stash extra throws.
  3. Bedroom. Switch your linens for a quick burst of coziness. Look for sheets with embroidered motifs that fit the season. Steal some pillows from the living room to add a pop of color. Add a faux-fur throw along the end of the bed. This is also a great place to set out your candles.
  4. Kitchen. You can get creative in the kitchen. Set out your fall- and winter-themed dinnerware. Switch up the kitchen linens: Opt either for earthy neutrals or jewel-tones with a bit of sparkle to brighten up the longer nights.
