Decorating for the holidays can be overwhelming. We listened to the questions you had and turned to our interior design team to get some answers. This month, Becca Roderick, director of One Kings Lane Interior Design, tackles your trickiest holiday design dilemmas.

Dear OKL,

I am throwing a holiday party for all my friends in a few weeks. I want it to be super stylish, but I don’t want it to be overtly Christmas themed. No red and green, please! How can I decorate in a way that feels festive but isn’t super Christmassy?

Dear Holiday Helper,

Think about it like you’re decorating for winter, as opposed to Christmas. You can add some really cozy throws to your sofa or some great throw pillows. Add stuff to your mantel, but think about adding a set of brass deer or a snow globe, something that isn’t so Christmassy but more a celebration of winter. Add a wreath to your front door, but don’t do the traditional evergreen. Think about using a eucalyptus wreath or an olive-branch wreath—something that will last the whole season. Good luck!

Dear OKL,

Help! I just moved into my first home with my husband, and we finally have a tree to decorate that’s all our own. Unfortunately we don’t have any ornaments that feel like us. I don’t want to go out and just buy a bunch of random ornaments that don’t feel like our personality or have no meaning to us. How can I curate a gorgeous, meaningful tree, and fast?

Dear Ornery Over Ornaments,

You’ll definitely want to start with some great, full lights. It will make your tree feel really festive, especially at night. Then think about adding some garland. Beautiful glittered beads or something strung across the branches is also going to make the tree feel really full, even if you don’t have a lot of ornaments. This is also a great time to think about investing in a beautiful tree topper and a tree skirt, as those are things you’re going to have for many, many years. Let’s get down to the ornaments. Find a couple of dozen that really speak to your personality and that you feel good about, put them up on the tree, and know that you’re going to add to that every year!

Dear OKL,

I just don’t have the time or energy to decorate for the holidays this year. I want to make sure my house looks great for my kids, but I can’t seem to find the time to go out and get decorations. What do I do?
