The 10 Most Popular Posts of 2023

We published 98 blog posts this year, encompassing home tours, trend reports, expert advice, recipes, and much more. Below were the 10 most popular of 2023. Did your favorites make the list?

Number 10: “Fall Trend Report 2023: Layer It On.” Honeyed neutrals, soft curves, and extra texture were the major decor trends we anticipated for fall/winter 2023-24—which weren’t trends so much as a continuation of the inviting warmth and comfort that had dominated interiors for the previous few years, made extra cozy and luxe. Shown above: the Zola Curved Wingback Chair in Cream Sherpa, the Carver Performance Velvet Sofa in Camel, the Mahogany PI Coffee Table, the Moresby Floor Lamp in Antiqued Brass, and the Ponderosa Rug in Birch. Number 9: “Make a Great Entrance.” Ideally your foyer or entryway should make a fabulous first impression of your home as well as allow for storage and organization of everything from coats to mail. Our advice shows how spacious and compact entries alike can achieve both goals.

Number 8: “Pinterest Predicts: Top Decor Trends for 2023.” A renewed focus on entryways was just one of the design trends that Pinterest predicted would be big last year. Spalike bathroom (with showers taking precedence over tubs), mushroom accessories, and “hipstoric” interiors were among the others. Photo by Frank Frances.

Number 7: “A Designer’s Petite Apartment—and Her Tips on Decorating Rentals.” Libby Smith is the designer in question, and her apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side is a charming New Traditionalist-meets-Eclectic haven, as seen in the living/dining area above. Hanging above the sofa is Countryside Etching Blue, which Libby says is a favorite piece. Photo by Jacqueline Clair.

Number 6: “A Designer Makes Her Grandparents’ Home Her Own.” The Georgia home of Cate Dunning, one-half of design firm GordonDunning, used to belong to her maternal grandparents. What’s more, several of the vintage and antique furnishings now in it had belonged to her paternal grandparents, who had lived in the same neighborhood. But by building an addition and layering favorite colors and patterns, Cate put her distinctive imprint on the space while retaining the home’s original warmth. Photo by Emily J. Followill.

Number 5: “French-Inspired Accents—and Plenty of Blue—in a California Home.” When the owners hired designer Ashley Macuga of Collected Interiors, this 1926 house had undergone a series of expansions that left it feeling disjointed. Ashley rectified that by implementing a blue-based palette throughout and adding millwork and flashes of brass that reference the home’s original details. Number 4: “The Season of Organic Luxury.” That’s what we dubbed spring 2023, because after several years of Naturalist ease—rattan, unfinished wood, natural-fiber rugs—glimmers of luxury were once again finding their way into decor. Case in point: the golden Comtesse Table Lamp shown above on the marble-top Rachel Nesting Tables and beside the Delano Performance-Linen Sofa in Almond. Also shown: the Brooklyn Accent Chairs. Number 3: “A Designer’s Georgia Home Filled with Art and Soul.” Like her business partner Cate Dunning, whose home is featured in our sixth most popular post above, GordonDunning’s Lathem Gordon let us into her home. And like Cate, Lathem loves layering colors and prints. Above all, she’s an art aficionado, with paintings and prints adorning just about every available space. Number 1: “Palm Beach Chic.” Citrus hues, chinoiserie, palm fronds, and a dash of whimsy–all your favorites—are the key elements of Palm Beach style, so it’s little wonder that our post showing how to make the look work for you was so popular. Shown above: the Exeter Side Chair in Lemon Floral, the Alberto Medium Two-Tier Chandelier in Plaster White, and the Canyon Ranch Stripe Patch Rug in Sky. Photo by Read McKendree.
